The Minutes of past SFEVA Chapter Meetings!

SFEVA MINUTES December 4, 2004

Met at Sherry & Meg’s, 1484 16th Ave., SF

Nine members present

Save the EVs Campaign: Marc says that the environmental groups behind the Jumpstart Ford campaign will be including efforts to save the existing Ford Ranger EV trucks but won’t offer much help at this point in saving other leased EVs like the lot of GM EV1s in Burbank. After much discussion, the SFEVA decided to help Jumpstart Ford and piggyback on their efforts around the Ranger, and to focus most of the rest of our energies on Toyota, which seems more promising than pressuring GM. We’ll offer assistance to any efforts by Southern California EV folks to save those EV1s.

All members are asked to gather as much information as possible before the next meeting on Toyota and the leased or sold RAV4s - where are they? How many? Who has them? (Anybody have a contact in the DMV, police dept., or AAA who could help us get this info?) Do any of us have contacts with potential allies/supporters? At the next meeting we’ll gather info and discuss possible strategies.

Make EVs Campaign: Sherry wrote letters to all the major auto companies who produced EVs, modeled after the one Lawrence wrote to Nissan, urging them to produce and sell EVs. These will be up on the Web site soon, and we ask everyone to write to the automakers.

Website: The shell is up (thanks to Jon) and content will be up soon. We'll announce it when it’s up. Please send ideas or content or photos for the web site to Sherry at shaalub [at] yahoo [dot] com, and she'll forward it to Jon. We agreed to funnel things through Sherry to avoid duplication. NOTE: Jon asks that we limit photos to 1024X768 pixels.

Education: We generally agreed to try to link with schools to create programs/events related to EVs during April, for Earth Day. John said he’d talk with School Board President Dan Kelly to get the names of the best people to contact about this. Steve suggested that we make contacts with drivers education companies to help disseminate EV info to students.

Marc reported on the action at the SF Auto Show with the Jumpstart Ford campaign of Rainforest Action Network and Global Exchange. He and another RAV4-EV driver parked out front (with permits arranged by Jumpstart Ford) for a few hours, answering questions, handing out a flyer that Marc put together, and educating people heading into or out of the Auto Show.

The group agreed that when we get “action alerts” from other organizations, Sherry and Marc will screen them together to decide whether they’re appropriate for SFEVA action.

The survey of 110-volt outlets for charging in the city continues. Please report sightings, especially in any city-owned garages/lots. We’ll compile a list and approach the City for permission to charge. Marc will contact the SF Environmental Dept. to seek their backing before we approach the Parking Dept.

The group decided to send a formal letter to SF supervisors and mayor saying the chapter opposes creating a southern entrance to the underground garage being built in Golden Gate Park, and especially opposes plans to widen the 9th Avenue entrance to the park into a 4-lane road. Sherry will send the letter. This is part of our strategy to build alliances with environmental groups opposing this project.

Miscellaneous:

  • Danny met Jackie Bennion, who produced the PBS P.O.V“Borders” series, including these episodes on EVs:
http://www.pbs.org/pov/borders/2004/air/air_ev1.html.
  • Greg talked to Lawrence Lee, a RAV4 EV technician for Toyota who is open to moonlighting. You can find him at the Toyota service shop at Geary & Spruce, or reach him at LLee240 [at] yahoo [dot] com.

NEXT TWO MEETINGS: will be on January 8 and February 5 at Marc's place, 847 Haight St. between Scott and Divisadero, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We decided to keep meeting in members’ homes until the SFEVA gets large enough to need a larger meeting space.
