Is the Honda Clarity line officially cancelled?

Last year, Honda announced it was moving toward a goal of getting rid of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles over the next two decades while experimenting with alternative fuel options. However, the automaker already has the Honda Clarity, which comes in battery-electric, fuel-cell and plug-in hybrid forms. Does the Clarity range still exist today or has the company canceled it completely?

What about the Honda Clarity Electric model?

2019 Honda Clarity Electric | American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

The all-electric version was promising, but the Honda Clarity Electric was discontinued in 2020. That may be because it was only available in California and Oregon as a lease option. Another reason could be due to its relatively low distance range on battery. Honda produced the Clarity Electric to offer just 89 miles of range.

According to Car and Driver, when you compare it to some of its rivals, like the Chevy Bolt or the Tesla Model 3, the Clarity Electric doesn’t even hold a candle when you can get 238 to 240 miles of range. There are a lot more of these electric vehicles in the automotive market that deliver a decent amount of miles on a single charge. If the Clarity Electric was still around, it should have improved far enough to keep up with the competition.

Honda has chosen to end production of the electric version of the Clarity as the automaker wants to focus more on the offered electric vehicles it has at the planning stage. Its goal is to release more electric vehicle models in the next few years.

Is the Honda Clarity fuel cell still around?

The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell is one of the most advanced vehicles in the Honda catalog. Unfortunately, the automaker discontinued the model in August 2021. However, it is still available as a lease option through the 2022 model year. According to Honda’s website, it offers up to $15,000 of hydrogen with a rental contract, which is useful.

This Clarity fuel cell was a tough sell because it had to be limited to the California area, which is the only state with enough infrastructure to power the car. Its rival, the Toyota Mirai, sells around 1,500 units a year, while the Honda sells around 1,000.

Honda has chosen to abandon its fuel cell car to make way for the next battery electric models that the company aims to produce and enter the market by 2024. In fact, the brand plans to sell only electric vehicles battery and hydrogen by 2040, according to Car and Driver.

Has the Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid model been discontinued?

The Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid was also discontinued in August 2021. You can still buy last year’s version until the end of this year if you still want one. After that, he heads to the used vehicle market. What prompted Honda to end production with the remaining alternative fuel vehicle?

Although there is no definitive information on the reasons, apart from the drop in sales, some speculation could explain the decision. While the plug-in hybrid model gets a range of 48 miles on the electric powertrain alone, when it switches to gas you can get around 300 miles on a full tank of gas, which isn’t that great as some of its rivals. .

His critics weren’t impressed at all. The steering was sluggish, they felt it had a very steep lean in the corners, and its infotainment system was outdated when you compare it to what its rivals offer. Additionally, the vehicle’s 40-foot steering cycles made parking a little more difficult than usual, and its braking performance left much to be desired.

The current Honda Clarity range was introduced in 2017 and slowly started to leave the market in 2020. With the last two remaining models being discontinued, we will still see them briefly until the end of this year.
