Tesla lets drivers turn electric cars into megaphones

San Francisco: Tesla has released an annual vacation software update that turns its electric cars into megaphones using external speakers that have been installed in recent vehicles.

Available for newer Tesla vehicles (2019 and newer), the feature adds vocal effects to whatever you say, and that will be played in your surroundings through the external speakers, Electrek reported on Friday.

The feature leverages Tesla’s remote live view via Sentry Mode which allows drivers to broadcast voice into the car using the Tesla mobile app.

The external speakers in Tesla cars repeat everything the driver says with a slight delay and with very serious echo and distortion.

In last year’s holiday update, Tesla released a “Boombox” feature that allows owners to play pre-recorded custom sounds through the speaker.

The electric vehicle company owned by Elon Musk has also agreed to stop allowing drivers and passengers to play video games on dashboard screens while vehicles are in motion.

The deal came a day after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a formal investigation into the game’s functionality, known as Passenger Play, reports The New York Times.
