The last time Detroit held an auto show, Kelley Blue Book said the average transaction price for a new vehicle was around $37,000.

Heading into the 2022 Detroit auto show this week, it’s now over $48,000.

And that’s only a fraction of the revolution this industry has experienced in the more than 1,300 days that have gone by without a Motor City auto show.

This year’s show will also be very different, as journalist Michael Martinez writes in this week’s issue of Automotive News. Organizers were already planning to rearrange the show before COVID-19 hit; the end product, after multiple postponements and a growing tendency for manufacturers to skip such events, is a “full reboot,” as Detroit Auto Dealers Association president Thad Szott told us.

The hometown automakers are still here, of course, but even General Motors has chosen to reveal the Chevrolet Equinox EV – a real “game changer” thanks to its $30,000 base price, as it was put. a dealer to reporter Richard Truett for another story this week – on TV six days before the event rather than at the show.

For anyone who remembers the years when dozens of production vehicles and concepts debuted in Detroit each January, the week ahead will be pretty light on big news. But there will be a giant rubber ducky and the stone-wheeled car that John Goodman drove in a 28-year-old movie with a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Of course, it’s not just the Detroit auto show that has struggled to stay relevant – even before the pandemic pause taught automakers that virtual reveals can be done cheaply and effectively. – and the dealer association deserves credit for working hard to keep it alive despite a long list of challenges.

Detroit’s past shows have been notable for introducing consumers to new brands, hosting surprise reveals and having plenty of free stunts, like Jeeps crashing through glass windows and amorous cattle roaming the streets.

It’s time to see if the few remaining automakers also care to make this one memorable. For more than the big rubber ducky.
