Video: Elon Musk talks about the future development of China’s electric vehicle market

Elon Musk was invited to the 2021 World New Energy Vehicle Congress in Hainan, China. Although he did not attend in person, he did so via a pre-recorded video and spoke about the future development of the Chinese electric vehicle market, the safety of autonomous driving and the security of data. JayInShanghai shared the video on YouTube. There were three questions he answered.

What are your expectations for the future development of the Chinese electric vehicle market?

“China is the world’s largest and most dynamic new energy vehicle market. Chinese consumers want a car with better connected and smarter features, so we see great potential for the growth of connected fully autonomous vehicles in China. Public sentiment and support for electric vehicles is at an inflection point never seen before, because they know it’s the future.

“We continue to work hard to reduce costs and increase our production rate to make electric vehicles as affordable as possible. I have great respect for many Chinese car manufacturers who use these technologies. My frank observation is that Chinese automakers are the most competitive in the world, not least because some are very good at software. And it’s the software that will shape the future of the automotive industry the most, from design to manufacturing to autonomous driving.

How Autonomous Driving Technology Improves Vehicle Safety

“Tesla is much more than a manufacturer of electric cars. We are developing fully autonomous vehicles with practical vision-based artificial intelligence, including the development of inference-level and training-level chips. I must stress that we believe that autonomous driving can be fully achieved by neural networks of vision. After all, humans use a biological vision neural network to drive. So it makes sense that computers would be able to drive using a silicon camera neural network.

“That said, safety is the top priority when we design Tesla vehicles and I have no doubts that we can achieve fully autonomous driving with 10 times the safety of the average human driver.”

How do autonomous vehicles ensure data security?

“Data security is not only the responsibility of one company, but also the cornerstone of the development of the entire industry. Tesla will work with national authorities in all countries to ensure the data security of smart and connected vehicles. Tesla hopes to contribute to both a digitized future of shared benefits, responsibilities and governance.

“With the rapid growth of autonomous driving technologies, vehicle data security is becoming more of a concern than ever before. We believe there is a need to address public concerns by applying appropriate technical measures. “

Chinese automakers are the most competitive in the world

One thing that really struck me while watching the video is Elon’s observation that Chinese automakers are the most competitive in the world. President Biden recently said:

“We are competing with China and many other countries for the 21st century.

“At the moment, China is leading the race. “

He also mentioned that the Chinese electric vehicle market is much larger than the US electric vehicle market at present. He is.

In June, MarketWatch noted that the United States has lagged behind China and Europe in recent years in manufacturing electric cars, and we are the third-largest manufacturer of electric vehicles. The United States’ share of cumulative global electric vehicle production has fallen to 18 percent, from 20 percent since 2010, according to a report by the International Clean Transportation Council (ICCT).

Nic Lutsey, Director of ICCT, said: “The reality of investing and producing electric vehicles stands in stark contrast to the posture of US automakers. Lutsey added that strong government policies are needed to make up for lost ground.

“The US auto industry cannot afford to be consistently five years behind the rest of the world in one of the most promising and strategically important areas. “

The article notes that China is the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles and accounted for about 44% of electric vehicle production until 2020. In 2020, the United States produced more than 450,000 electric vehicles, and Tesla accounted for some. about 85%. The United States also offers fewer incentives to buyers of electric vehicles than other countries.
