Volkswagen Germany has launched online sales of its all-electric ID.4 and ID.5 models for local customers. Online sales for the ID.3 will follow soon.
“Surveys show that around two thirds of our customers also want to be able to buy our vehicles online. We are now fulfilling that wish. Our mission is to provide our customers with an excellent bidding and buying experience, both in dealerships and online. As a result, we will also sustainably strengthen our competitiveness,” explained Klaus Zellmer, member of the VW Brand Board of Management.
Customers can set up leasing contracts for the ID.4 and ID.5 online in Germany. Online sales will start in Germany and will later be rolled out to other European countries. Dealers will participate in Volkswagen’s online sales as they will remain the customer’s point of contact for advice, test drives, delivery and service.
“Online sales will not replace the physical dealership. We need a good online presence combined with a strong and powerful local presence provided by our dealers. Dealers are and will remain the face of our customers. They are indispensable when it comes to providing personalized and knowledgeable advice,” added Zellmer.
Volkswagen plans to expand its online leasing service for new vehicles. It aims to eventually include cash purchases and online financing options.
Volkswagen’s digital sales are part of its ACCELERATE strategy, which aims to accelerate the incumbent automaker’s transition to a software-driven mobility provider. The strategy also aims to make VW’s range of electric vehicles the majority of sales volumes by 2030. The exact target is for Volkswagen’s electric vehicles to exceed 70% of European sales volume, 50% in China and in the USA.
Volkswagen ID. family seems ready to adopt the ACCELERATE strategy. VW started ID.5 production earlier this year. Volkswagen also recently unveiled the ID. Buzz, which is becoming as popular as its ancestor the Bulli minibus.
